[Cycling] A Successful Solo Breakaway: Racing for Family and the Finish Line

    By Jisub Seo

14-year Veteran Teacher | Passionate Randonneur | Doting Father

This weekend, I joined the I-BIKE team for a 110km long-distance ride. The course started from the Agricultural Museum, passing through Hwawon, Usuyeong, and Haenam, and finally returning via the Solaseado Bridge. It was a challenging route with plenty of “rolling hills” and a total elevation gain of about 850m.

    ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Course Overview: Hwawon ~ Usuyeong ~ Solaseado (110km)

This course is a ‘comprehensive gift set’ for cyclists in the Jeonnam region:

    • Hwawon Peninsula (Rolling Hills): Famous for its stunning ocean views but notorious for relentless short climbs that test your interval endurance.
    • Usuyeong (Historic Rest Stop): The site of the historic Myeongnyang Battle, providing a perfect spot for mid-ride refueling.
    • Haenam to Solaseado (High-Speed Flat): A 2-lane road where you can feel the pure speed, though it requires caution due to traffic and rough road surfaces.
    • Solaseado Bridge (Hidden Path): A unique bicycle path under the massive bridge, offering an exotic atmosphere and a car-free finish.

๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ The Tactical Escape: “Daddy’s Breakaway”

About an hour before the finish, I faced a dilemma. To get home in time to take care of my children, I couldn’t afford the group’s pace. At the Hwawon section, I made a bold decision: A Solo Breakaway.

I pushed the pedals hard, constantly checking my shoulder, wondering, “Will the peloton catch me?” I had to manage my power output strategicallyโ€”staying fast enough to stay away while saving enough energy for the final stretch.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ The Jungle and the Gravel

The escape wasn’t without its hurdles. Navigating the path under the Solaseado Bridge for the first time, I took two wrong turns into unpaved, “jungle-like” sections. My road bike struggled through the rough terrain, and for a moment, I feared my lead would evaporate.

    ๐Ÿ Victory: Mission Accomplished

Despite the off-road detours, the breakaway was a success! I arrived at the destination without being caught by the chasing group and made it home exactly on schedule for my family duties. It was a ride where I felt the thrill of a professional racer, all for the sake of being a responsible father.

  • [Cycling] March 1st Independence Day Ride:

Fighting High Winds over Chilsan Bridge in Sin-an Island

    By Jisub Seo

14-year Veteran Teacher | Policy Director, Jeonnam Teachers’ Union | Passionate Randonneur

While the winter chill still lingers, for Korean cyclists, ‘March 1st’ (Independence Movement Day) is a symbolic day that marks the official start of the riding season. This past weekend, I joined my I-BIKE team for a high-intensity season-opening ride. Hereโ€™s a record of our journey through the beautiful coastal roads of Jeollanam-do.

๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Strategy Over Ego: From 200km to 120km

Originally, our plan was the Korea Randonneurs Permanent Course (PT-166) covering 200km. However, considering the varying fitness levels of the team and the fierce headwinds of early spring, our manager, Dong-yoon, made a wise call to shorten the route to a 120km Chilsan Bridge course.

Even with the shorter distance, maintaining an average speed of 30km/h was a struggle against the gales. This ride reminded me that the true virtues of long-distance cycling are flexibility and safety.

๐Ÿ“‰ Overcoming Physical Limits with Precision Nutrition

Having been off the saddle for two weeks due to camping and neck disc issues since the ‘Rapha Festive 500’ in December, my fitness level had dropped significantly. After the 90km mark, my legs began to protest. What saved the day was a meticulous nutrition strategy I developed with AI:

    • 90 mins before: 2 Bananas (Carb loading)
    • 30 mins before: 1 Cereal bar
    • During ride: 1/3 Cereal bar every hour
    • At 2-hour mark: 1 Energy gel
    • Mid-point: 2 Choco-pies

By fueling before the fatigue hit, I managed to make up for my lack of “engine” efficiency with “fuel” efficiency. It was a successful experiment in real-time metabolic management!

๐ŸŒŠ Chilsan Bridge: Jeollanam-doโ€™s Best Scenic Route

The Chilsan Bridge course (Hampyeong to Muan) is arguably one of the most beautiful coastal routes in South Korea. With minimal traffic and vast ocean views, itโ€™s a “must-ride” for any cycling enthusiast visiting the Jeonnam province. Despite the pain, the stunning vista between the islands provided the motivation to keep pedaling.

๐Ÿ“ Next Destination: Haenam Oceano (Hwawon ~ Usuyeong ~ Solaseado)

With the first long ride of the season successfully completed, I am already looking forward to the next step.

    • Schedule: This coming weekend, 8:00 AM
    • Route: Hwawon โ†’ Usuyeong โ†’ Solaseado Bridge (Approx. 110km)
    • Goal: Maintain 30-32km/h and build endurance

The scenic coastal roads of Haenam are calling. Iโ€™ll be back with another update after conquering the Solaseado Bridge!

  • [K-Cycle] Conquering Gwangju 400K: 22 Hours of Grit and Life Lessons

By Jisub Seo 14-year Veteran Teacher | Policy Director, Jeonnam Teachers’ Union | Passionate Randonneur

Following my successful 200K and 300K rides, I faced the ultimate challenge just two weeks later: the Gwangju 400K Brevet. If 200K taught me about the cold before dawn, and 300K about the chill after sunset, the 400K was a total masterclass in endurance and strategic planning.

Here is my record of the 22-hour and 13-minute journey that pushed me beyond my limits.

    1. Strategy: Winning the Battle Against Cold

From my previous 300K experience, I knew that the “post-sunset chill” combined with sweat-soaked clothes was my greatest enemy. For the 400K, I coordinated with a support car to leave fresh clothes at a midpoint for a full change. Equipped with dual headlights, taillights, and a rear carrier, I was ready for the long night.

    2. The Legend: S-WORKS TARMAC SL6

This ride was powered by one of the most memorable bikes of my life: the S-Works Tarmac SL6. Although the industry was shifting toward disc brakes at the time, this rim-brake masterpiece offered the perfect balance of lightweight agility and stiffness. Its low center of gravity provided incredible comfort over the grueling 400km distance.

    3. The Timeline: From Cherry Blossoms to Solitary Night

    • 08:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Unlike the earlier starts of previous rides, we began at 8:00 AM. Under the beautiful cherry blossoms, the pace was light and brisk. I was already shedding my windbreaker within the first hour.
    • 03:30 PM (151km Mark): Reached the 4th Control Point (CP) near Namwon. Morale was still high.
    • 07:00 PM & Beyond: As the sun dipped, my energy plummeted. The real battle against the biting cold began.
    • 02:00 AM (Near Naju): Exhausted and freezing, my pace dropped significantly. I remember taking a desperate break near Naju, relying on the camaraderie of my fellow rider, Dong-yoon, to keep going.

๐Ÿ’ก Reflection: Why We Challenge Ourselves

Looking back at the brevet card filled with stamps, I realize itโ€™s more than just ink on paper. The 22-hour journey taught me that “I can do it.” This sense of achievement has trickled down into my daily life, my parenting, and my career as a teacher. It is the realization that consistent effort eventually leads to success.

I am now looking forward to my next challenge: the newly released Korea Randonneurs PT-166 course.

  • [K-Cycle] Gwangju 300K: A 15-Hour Battle Against Limits and Nature

By Jisub Seo 14-year Veteran Teacher | Policy Director, Jeonnam Teachers’ Union | Passionate Randonneur

Following last year’s Gunsan Permanent 200km and the Sinan 200km Brevet, I faced a massive new wall just three weeks later: the Randonneurs 300km. While 200km felt like a ‘daytime ride,’ the 300km distance brought a completely different level of psychological and physical pressure.

Starting at 6:00 AM and finishing around 10:30 PM, I would like to share the record of my 15 hours and 13 minutes spent on the road.

    1. Facing All Four Seasons in a Single Day

[Image: Start at 6:00 AM] The heavy silence of the pre-dawn road.

The biggest adversary of this ride was the erratic temperature. I started in the chilling dawn, pedaled under a scorching sun at noon, and had to fight extreme cold again as soon as the sun dipped below the horizon. I realized that cycling is not just about pedaling; it is a profound process of testing one’s limits against the raw forces of nature.

    • [Image: Around 8:00 AM, Somewhere on an Uphill] The first climb as the world wakes up.
    • [Image: 4:00 PM, Cruising Comfortably] Keeping the momentum under the afternoon sun.

    2. Gear Limits and the Desire for Upgrades

In the latter part of the ride, my reliable Garmin Edge 520 began to cry out for battery. Unfortunately, the final 40km of my journey could not be recorded. On the dark bike paths leading back to Gwangju, I felt a strong urge to upgrade to a device with a longer battery life, like the Garmin 1000. That final 40km, riding alone through the darkness and cold, remains an unforgettable solitary battle.

Furthermore, I rediscovered the vital importance of a high-quality headlight. The quality of light in extreme conditions is a critical variable for safety and morale, which eventually led me to purchase a new Moon light after this ride.

    3. After the Finish: Between Fear and Hope

The heavy fatigue and heart-swelling pride I felt in the car on the way home are still vivid. While the fear of “Could I do this alone again?” still lingers, I know I was only able to complete this journey thanks to the passion and sacrifice of my club members.

I will return with a post about the Gwangju 400k next time.

  • Strategic Review of the New $37M AI Education Center in Gwangju

    Insights from a Veteran Educator

By Jisub Seo 14-year Veteran Teacher | Policy Director, Jeonnam Teachers’ Union | Former Coordinator at Mokpo SW Experience Center

    1. Global Tech Giants in Public Education: Innovation or Marketization?

The active participation of global big-tech firms like Samsung, Intel, and Google in the Gwangju AI Education Center is encouraging. However, from a professional perspective, it also suggests that public education has become a lucrative target market for the private sector. While corporate infrastructure is invaluable, we must ensure that public institutions do not become mere testbeds for specific brands, maintaining the autonomy of our educational policies.

    2. The Trap of Fixed Interiors: A Need for Modular Exhibits

Visually, the center is stunning with its high-end, integrated interior design. However, my experience operating the Mokpo SW Center suggests that fixed interiors are a significant risk. Within 2 to 3 years, students lose interest because they encounter the same content repeatedly. It is disappointing that the center did not adopt “Standardized Modular Booths”โ€”similar to art galleriesโ€”which allow for easy installation, removal, and inter-center rotation to keep the curriculum fresh.

    3. AI Sovereignty: Pedagogy Must Back the Slogan

I fully support the philosophy of “AI Sovereignty”โ€”the idea that AI education should be a basic right for all. However, a slogan is only as strong as its curriculum. Every exhibition booth must be backed by rigorous pedagogical research linked to grade-specific achievement standards. We must move beyond “one-time experiences” and logically prove how these activities foster specific competencies in our students.

    4. Sustainability through Open Governance

To prevent a $37M facility from becoming a mere “showroom,” it must adopt an open-platform model. In some regions, administrative barriers often limit student and teacher access. Taking the Gyeongju Invention Experience Center as a benchmark, the Gwangju AI Center must remain a vibrant hub accessible via mobile booking for the entire community, including weekends and weekday afternoons.

    ๐Ÿ’ก Closing Thoughts

The true value of this investment lies not in the grandeur of the building, but in its constant openness and adaptability. I hope the Gwangju AI Education Center evolves into a living laboratory where every child can dream a new dream every time they visit.

  • [K-Cycle] My First Official 200km Brevet: Gwangju-Sinan

Chasing the March Fog on an S-Works Tarmac SL6

    [EN]

After testing my limits with the Saemangeum Permanent in 2018, I decided it was time to step into the world of official Randonneurs Korea events. My choice was the Gwangju 200km (Sinan-gun).

Even though it was right before the start of the new school yearโ€”a busy time for any teacherโ€”I felt ready. The route was mostly flat, passing through the beautiful salt farms of Sinan, making it a perfect entry-point for my first 200km Brevet.

The Bone-Chilling Cold of March(CLICK TO STRAVA LINK)

The Gwangju Brevet always kicks off in front of a familiar Samchuly bike shop. While the sun was up, the first 30 minutes were dominated by a thick, heavy fog.

The cold was unimaginable. I still vividly remember shivering uncontrollably as my hands felt like they were literally falling off. I was riding with some high school teammates who, incredibly, were wearing half-finger gloves. Watching them tremble in the mist is a memory I wonโ€™t soon forget!

The “Team Car” Experience: S-Works Tarmac SL6

This ride was extra special because our cycling club had just upgraded from the S-Works Tarmac SL5 to the SL6. Riding together on matching “Team Cars” gave us a massive boost in morale and a strong sense of camaraderie. Thereโ€™s something powerful about a paceline of identical S-Works bikes cutting through the wind.

    Crossing the Line

Randonneuring is about the journey and the proof. Stamping the cue sheet at each control point provides a unique sense of accomplishment that you don’t get in a typical race. It was a long day, but finishing that first official 200km was the moment I truly became a Randonneur.

  • Beyond the Screen: A Critical Look at Koreaโ€™s AI Digital Textbooks

[EN] Hi everyone, it’s Jisub. Today, I want to share a column I recently wrote for a Korean news outlet. It’s about the “AI Digital Textbooks (AIDT)”โ€”the hottest and most controversial topic in Korean education right now. While the technology is flashy, I wanted to question where the underlying educational philosophy truly lies.

English Version: Digital Platform Government and AI Textbooks

By Jisub Seo, Policy Director of Jeonnam Teachers’ Union

(Originally published on April 21, 2025)

The debate over AI Digital Textbooks is not just about adopting new technology. It is a fundamental question about our educational philosophy and how we prepare the next generation.

    1. A Rushed Innovation?

On January 17, 2025, the National Assembly held a hearing to discuss the rapid implementation of AI Digital Textbooks. The government aims for a full-scale rollout by 2025. However, the process has felt more like a political sprint than a pedagogical evolution. The initial planning was led by technology experts, with a noticeable absence of classroom teachers and educational specialists.

    2. Market Logic vs. Educational Integrity

Since the current administration took office, education policy has leaned heavily toward market-driven models. We are seeing structures where private companies can profit through public education under the guise of “digital transformation.” This raises serious concerns about the commercialization of our classrooms.

    3. The Harsh Reality of the Classroom

In the field, we are facing practical nightmares:

    • Server Failures: Constant overloads preventing students and teachers from accessing materials.
    • Administrative Burden: Complex login processes (Digital One-pass) that force teachers to spend more time on tech support than teaching.
    • Content Errors: Technical bugs where answers are marked incorrectly, hindering the quality of learning.
    • Lack of Collaboration Support: The system fails to accommodate co-teaching scenarios, such as those with Native English Teachers.

    4. The Fundamental Question: Why?

We must ask: Why are we doing this? If the goal is digital literacy, we must address parental concerns about screen time. If itโ€™s for learning efficiency, we must listen to pedagogical experts. If itโ€™s to support teachers, then the voices of those in the classroom must be at the center of the policyโ€”not marginalized.

    Conclusion: People Over Technology

Education should be a public promise, not a political slogan. For AI textbooks to be a true innovation, we must clarify their purpose and establish a democratic process involving students, parents, and teachers. Technology is just a tool; the soul of education is, and always will be, the people.

  • [K-Cycle] My First 200km Randonneurs Challenge

    English Version

2018 was more than just a year; it was the year of my ” Comeback.”

In 2017, I had to put my cycling life on hold to focus on my newborn daughter, Jiwoo. After the “Rapha Prestige Ulsan” in April 2017, my saddle saw very little action. However, in 2018, I decided to return to the road. My club members introduced me to a new genre called “Randonneuring,” and I didn’t hesitate to join the challenge.

    image.png

    ๐Ÿ“ What is Randonneuring?

Originating in France, Randonneuring is a long-distance, non-competitive cycling event where riders must complete a set course within a time limit, completely self-supported. Korea Randonneurs hosts these events, known as Brevets, ranging from 200km to over 1,200km. My first gateway was the Gunsan 200km Brevet.

๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ 200km of Pain and Glory

I prepared for a month, gradually increasing my mileage from 60km to 120km, but the actual 200km was a different beast entirely.

    • The Struggle: I started the morning shivering from the cold, only to battle scorching heat by midday. I often found myself lying on the ground in whatever shade I could find at control points. Despite the agony, I finished in 6 hours and 50 minutes with an average speed of 30.1km/h.
    • The Highlight: The most unforgettable part was the Saemangeum Seawall, the longest in Korea. Riding on a vast, highway-like road stretching for dozens of kilometers over the ocean provides a sense of freedom that erases all fatigue.

    โš™๏ธ The Rig: S-Works Tarmac SL5

My partner for this epic ride was an S-Works Tarmac SL5 (Rim Brake version). Equipped with a Shimano Dura-Ace mechanical groupset, it supported my comeback perfectly. Although it has since been upgraded to electronic shifting, the photos of the mechanical setup remind me of my raw passion at the time.

Eight years later, the cool breeze of Saemangeum and the hard floor of the rest stops remain vivid in my memory. If you want to experience the true beauty of Koreaโ€™s West Coast, I highly recommend this route.

  • Hello, I am Jisub: The Riding Teacher from Korea

    ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ English Version

    Welcome to K-CycleTeacher.com!

I am Jisub, a veteran primary school teacher with 14 years of experience, a passionate Randonneur, and an educational policy researcher based in Mokpo, South Korea.

๐ŸŽ Professional: A K-Teacher at the Forefront of AI Education My journey began in Busan, where I attended a foreign language high school. My early fascination with international cultures and languages eventually led me to the teaching profession. I started my career in Haenam, the southernmost part of mainland Korea, and have since evolved into a leader in educational technology and policy.

Currently, as a policy researcher and a graduate student specializing in AI Convergence Education, I strive to balance innovation with pedagogical integrity. I recently testified at a National Assembly hearing to provide professional insights into the implementation of AI Digital Textbooks (AIDT) in Korea.

๐Ÿšด Passion: A K-Cycle Pushing Limits Across the Nation Cycling has been part of my life since childhood. Influenced by a former professional cyclist during my military service, I transitioned into professional road cycling. Over the past decade, I have completed Randonneuring challenges of 200km, 300km, and 400km. My current goal is to ride over 7,000km annually and achieve a podium finish in Team Time Trial (TTT) events.

๐ŸŒ Purpose of This Blog On this site, I will share:

    1. Authentic insights from the Korean classroom and the future of AI in education.
    2. The breathtaking scenery of Korea and the grit of endurance cycling.
